CANCUN,
Mexico (Contributed by Scott Edsall)
"In reviewing you rankings of the worst airports, I was reminded of a
trip to Cancun in the summer of 1990. At that time, to call the Cancun
airport a filthy toilet would be a compliment. You have to pay a tax to
leave the airport, it was around 18 pesos for my wife and I. I gave my
last 20 pesos, and wanted the two pesos change for a souvenir, but the
very rude (everybody that worked there was rude), counter bitch refused to
give me my change, as they obviously pocket it (steal it) from tourists. I
raised my voice about this injustice, and an automatic weapon bearing
soldier grasped his rifle and scowled at me. Forget the two pesos and get
the hell out of there I thought!. At that time, the airport was a concrete
floor in a warehouse looking area, totally filthy, insects & rodents,
furniture was junk, with local beggars and heavily armed soldiers
everywhere. Sleep, no way!!!!, we just sat there stunned, praying to
get out alive!. The flights there and back were also the worst I have ever
had. On the return flight there was the real possibility of crashing, as
the flight crew spent their time in and out of the cockpit drinking and
partying with the pilots. Thank god we got back alive. We will never go to
South America or Mexico ever again!!!!!. "
