    Boarding Gates closed overnight
There is no waiting area available if you have to stay at the airport overnight to wait for a connecting flight. The boarding gates are closed overnight so the only place to stay is at the departures floor next to the main entrance where the security guard is. The guard will ask to see your itinerary before letting you in as the airport is closed at night. The "waiting area" is a corner consisting of 4 plastic chairs and a hard non-carpeted floor. Bring a sleeping bag.

    I was licked
I was licked upon arrival at this interesting airport. No, I don't know the man that administered the lick and run and was not able to get a good look as he quickly scampered away! This airport is great when you land as the run way is surrounded by airplanes that have been shot down in the past...bullet holes and all! Do NOT attempt sleeping during the day, the airport is beyond noisy!!! Oh, and the custom agents will allow you to put your things in someone elses bags if they tell you you have too much stuff in your own. I got a hammock home this way!

(Contributed by Paul) - "My first trip to Guatemala did not go as planned and I ran out of money except for my 10 dollar exit tax. I was traveling alone and So I made to the airport and bundled down. One of the airline personnel asked me if I was waiting for a flight I said yes but that it did not leave until the next morning, so she found a security guard and told him that I would be staying the night. I thought everything had been settled so I lay out my sleeping bag, lock my duffle bag and fold it under my head (so no one would steal it). And in the middle of the night a cop woke me and asked to see my ticket and passport. Once he looked them over he told me to go back to sleep, and was polite about it. I had no other problems. My overall rating of the airport is that it is well maintained and clean, the safety is on par with central America, and comfortable to sleep in. Generally if y...

Everything closes at 9pm, and the cleaning man sleeps in the mens room - I hope, since he was in there for hours with the door locked inside. There aren't any flights in the night, and almost no other people. It is a little spooky, but secure enough. The airport staff arrives at 5am when the airport starts to live again and you can buy some coffee or check in..." Added 06 Nov 05

Security was even worse as they confiscating my tweezers, bottled water, pringles container, and incense (I purchased it in Guatemala). I questioned the lady to why she was taking these things and she pretended not to hear me.Finally, I just gave me and accepted my losses for these strange items (this was before the liquid ban). Once we got near out gate, there was no place to sit and we tried to nap on the floor for a few hours. However, the people sniffing around us and yelling on cell phones in a very cramped area did not allow that to happen. Yikes." Added 01 April 2007

(Contributed by Steve) - "Arriving and departing at GUA are two dramatically different experiences. Upon arrival at GUA, you are forced into a long, dimly lit hallway with two customs agents at the end. If like me, you have the unfortunate experience of arriving at GUA at the same time as three other flights, the customs process can take well over an hour, even though the actual customs interview only takes about 20 seconds. Baggage claim consists of a room no more than 20ft x 20ft, with two small belts and hundreds of people. How we managed to get all of our luggage will forever be a mystery.Departing GUA is a much different experience. This side of the airport is going through renovation. Other than the fact we had to fight through a small riot to get into the airport, the ticketing process was smooth. In our case, security did not seemed to care what we carried on the plane. The gate ...
